Folkestone is undergoing a transformation into a centre for creativity and art. The regeneration of the area around the harbour is still in progress but already there are many new and interesting shops and galleries particularly on the Old High Street and Tontine Street. Folkestone has a working harbour with fishing boats providing the harbour side fish market with fresh supplies depending on weather and tides. There is also a farmers market on Sunday selling local produce.
The sandy beach at the end of the harbour provides children with the traditional seaside fun - including rock pools and the possibility of finding fossils. There is a pitch and put golf course and tennis courts, a fabulous children's adventure play area, outdoor amphitheatre, great walks over and around the famous white cliffs as well as cycle routes for all ages and abilities.
In 2008 Folkestone hosted its first Triennial, a sculpture exhibition with contributions by Tracey Emin, Mark Wallinger and many others. The second Triennial was held from June to September 2011. Some of the sculptures remain in Folkestone as permanent installations. Further details are available on the Triennial website.
